Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Outbreak

On 31 December 2019 Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first reported from Wuhan, China. The disease spread within China and other Countries.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses. The epidemic coronavirus is the new type coronavirus (2019-nCoV) of the beta genus. It is named as the crown of the virus coated with its projections to the periphery.

The new Coronavirus 2019-nCoV can spread through respiratory droplets. Respiratory viruses are usually transmitted through droplets from affected people or through contaminated products with viruses. Coronavirus cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases.

To most people the symptoms are tend to be mild, but the death rate up to today (11th of Feb) is at 2%, and it is even 4% at Wuhang city. The tipical infection symptoms are fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Infection can cause pneumonia, in worst cases kidney failure and even death.

How to protect ourselves?

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread listed below,

  1. Wear face masks to cover mouth and nose while going outside
  2. Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  3. Avoid close contact with anyone who has cough and fever.

Importance to wear face masks

The transmission of new coronavirus through respiratory droplets is the main way of transmission, and can also be transmitted through contact.

According to the current epidemiological characteristics, 40-60-year-old patients are more common, mainly male, children have already suffered from the disease, people are generally susceptible, for the elderly over 60 years old, there are basic diseases (such as kidney disease, diabetes, lung disease, etc.)

Non-woven face mask, surgical mask and medical mask is an important defense line to prevent respiratory infectious diseases, and can reduce the risk of new coronavirus infection. Face masks can not only prevent the patient from spraying droplets, reduce the amount and speed of the droplets, but also block the droplets containing virus and prevent the wearer from inhaling.

Recommended face mask types and users

1. Disposable medical mask: it is recommended to be used by the public in non crowded public places.

2. Medical surgical mask: the protective effect is better than disposable medical mask. It is recommended to wear it during the on-the-job period for suspected cases, public transport department and passengers, taxi drivers, sanitation workers, service personnel in public places, etc.

3. KN95 / N95 and above particulate protective mask: the protective effect is better than that of medical surgical mask and disposable medical mask. It is recommended to use it by field investigation, sampling and testing personnel. The public can also wear it in highly crowded places or closed public places.

4. Medical protective mask: it is recommended to be worn by medical staff in fever clinic, isolation ward and confirmed patients when they are transferred.

Face mask wearing principle

The basic principles are scientific and reasonable wearing, standardized use and effective protection. The details are as follows:

  1. It is necessary to wear masks when entering densely populated or closed public places.
  2. It is recommended to wear disposable medical masks in open and ventilated places in areas with high incidence of epidemic; and wear medical surgical masks or particle protective masks in densely populated or closed public places.
  3. In case of suspected symptoms, wear particle respirator or medical respirator without expiratory valve.
  4. Cotton gauze mask, sponge mask and activated carbon mask have no protective effect on the prevention of virus infection.

Handling principle of mask after use

The mask worn by healthy people does not have the risk of spreading the new coronavirus. It usually changes when the respirator is deformed, moistened or dirty, resulting in reduced protective performance. The masks used by healthy people can be treated according to the requirements of domestic waste classification.

The masks worn by suspected cases or confirmed patients shall not be discarded at will. They shall be treated as medical wastes, strictly in accordance with the relevant process of medical wastes, and shall not enter the circulation market.
